The Bible also cautions that education isn't everything. Solomon wrote, "… Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh" (Ecclesiastes 12:12). He is not saying not to study, but that because there is no end to learning, we should not place undue emphasis on it. Then working with survey measurement expert Ben Domingue and sociologist Kathleen Mullan Harris, I used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health to see how more and less religious children from the same families performed. According to our analysis, more intensely religious teens earned higher GPAs in high school, on average, even compared with their own siblings. But why?

Within a short time, God revealed a need for something different. And at the time, Christian unschooling was a “dirty” word. Yet, Julie felt like the Lord was leading their family toward a Christian unschooling approach, in a sense, it is child-directed learning. During the 1970s, racially naive economic frameworks that were developed in the 1950s and 1960s entered the mainstream of public policy. As they entered the mainstream of educational policy specifically, left- as well as right-leaning educational researchers began speaking of the politics and function of schooling through classical economic theories of production and consumption, including efficiency, markets, and public goods/private goods. Footnote 18 According to this “goods” model, public schooling in the United States served two competing kinds of goals: allocating public goods such as political socialization and human capital development, both of which benefited society as a whole, and the allocation of the private good of mobility—individual competitive advantage in a capitalist economy achieved primarily through credentialing. Footnote 19 The role of whiteness in these accounts was secondary and exceptional. Moreover, this same public goods/private goods framing soon captured the heart of federal and state school policy and jurisprudence as well, driving efforts toward privatization and toward “school choice” policy solutions such as vouchers for private schools or quasi-private “charter schools,” tuition tax credits, and other approaches. Footnote 20 The takeaway from these findings is not meant to encourage people to become more religious or to promote religion in schools. Rather, they point to a particular set of mindsets and habits that help abiders succeed – and qualities that schools reward in their students. Religious landscape Some people see education as a cure-all for society’s ills. However, education, in and of itself, does nothing to combat ungodliness. In fact, knowledge, apart from the love of God, leads to pride (1 Corinthians 8:1). Nicodemus was “Israel’s teacher,” yet he did not understand even the basics of spiritual life (John 3:10). Paul was a highly educated man, having been trained in the best Jewish school of his day (Acts 22:3), and he used his education to communicate effectively to people of many cultures (Acts 17:28; Titus 1:12). Yet Paul’s education certainly did not make him holy (1 Timothy 1:16), and he warned of those who were “always learning and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2 Timothy 3:7). Simply knowing facts does not make one a better person, and it is indeed possible to be a highly educated fool. When I first began homeschooling, I studied out all the different philosophy's trying to find my niche. Were we Classical Educators or did we lean more toward Charlotte Mason or a Thomas Jefferson Education? What I found was that in each one there were desirable traits and aspects that I liked and wanted to incorporate. The same is true for an unschooling approach.

A third, critically important mechanism of schooling as a white good is the ability to control mobility, a process I have called hobbling. Footnote 94 Colossians 3:17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” God is the source of all wisdom and the Biblical definition of wisdom simply put is to fear the Lord. True wisdom is only found in being completely obedient to God as He has commanded in His Word, and in fearing Him.

This book is wonderful regardless of it your new to homeschooling or not. It really feels like your listening to a dear friend tell you all she's learned and what's worked for her family and why. It could be a great deal of encouragement for someone struggling or wonderful wisdom for parents with children at any age. Outside of formal laws of exclusion and segregation, however, whiteness has been advanced through other means, from private organizations and agreements, popular culture, school curricula, and economic behavior, to outright defiance by legal authorities against those of other jurisdictions.
