Sometimes details seem slippery. Things I think I can remember but they’re like soap. There’s no grip, and I’m not sure if I made them up or perhaps missed something altogether.

It was more like glancing,” I say. “He noticed her and smiled. Then a few minutes later he looked at her as she walked past, and again when we left.” Yeah, yeah,” she says, waving her cigarette hand. “It’s too painful. They can’t be near you or London because it reminds them too much of Rosie.” Her tone compresses, reciting my own words. “Doesn’t change the fact they’re being selfish.” It’s possible she lost it. Dropped or left behind somewhere. But it’s also possible someone took it. Purposefully dismantled, smashed. Evidence destroyed. I think it’s supposed to be a boot scraper. Something my parents left behind.” I shrug. “I needed to keep the door open.” A gripping story about suburban American lives ripped apart. . . . Hard to put down, or ever forget.”— Minneapolis Star-Tribune

She purses her lips before sipping her drink. “What about your job here at the Barbican—any children drinking syrup? Trying to chew on a painting?” It is set over multiple time lines. When books show what has happened in the past and what is happening in the present I find it really helps the reader (if it is well done) understand why things are happening and what has lead to the present activities and decisions. It also shows the bigger picture. You can’t sit here,” I said, glancing around, conscious of someone loitering outside the corner shop. “It’s not safe.” Thirty-one. The same age as me, which somehow feels significant. He doesn’t look it. There are crinkles round his eyes when he smiles, but they barely leave a mark. As I start to put the phone away, the screen lights up with another notification. I swipe and something inside my rib cage clenches. New message from Oliver Barlow.

I cut off a corner of the egg white and pop it in my mouth, the greasy texture burning my tongue. The sear of heat feels good. A sharp stimulant against the numbness that blunts my body every morning. I can’t remember the last time I had a dream. For the past few months my sleep has been stagnant, hollow, and sometimes when I open my eyes it feels like my mind’s been wiped blank. I was originally drawn to this book by its eye catching cover and its intriguing synopsis. I am also a huge fan of Rona's previous books and if this is half as good as her previous books it is sure to be great. It also stated in the synopsis that this book is 'The most twisty and unputdownable thriller of the year – perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Mark Edwards and Gone Girl'. I am a huge fan of 'Gone Girl', Lisa Jewell and Mark Edwards so am looking forward to see if it lives up to this. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).I look up and he’s watching me, a soft smile in his stubble. Okay, then: confident, not shy. And undoubtedly handsome. To be fair, the book looks amazing. Celebrating the unique cuisine with all its cultural subtleties. I’m just not much of a cook. Something tells me Luke isn’t, either, despite his mum’s talent.
