If you're interested in using High John the Conqueror root for protection, there are several ways to incorporate it into your practice. One way is to carry a small piece of the root with you to provide personal protection from negative energy. You can also add the root to protection charms or amulets, like mojo bags, to make them more powerful. If you anoint these objects with High John the Conqueror oil, they can gain extra strength. A masterwork of the uncanny. A trip into fresh, bizarre, thrilling new territory. Reading it is almost a hallucinatory experience—it takes daring swerves away from what we call reality, but stays close enough to life to get under your skin. By the end you’ll be altered on a cellular level, questioning what you thought you knew.”– Elvia Wilk, author of Oval: A Novel High John the Conqueror is also prepared in the form of anointing oil, spiritual incense, scented sachet powders, and ritual bathing and cleaning supplies. I think this falls short of an accurate depiction of what the police are. While I wanted to write a novel that did not idealize or correct the sort of ire directed at the police — which, as I said, I think is often justified — I wanted also to write about people who, a lot of the time, are doing sensible things that are societally necessary. Having to clean up the mess that modern capitalism leaves is often a thankless task, but there are people in there motivated by good and decent reasons; they’re not a species apart from other civil servants. There’s been a lot of discussion and debate lately about the nature of policing. What was it like to be writing a book where most of the central characters are part of a police department while that debate was happening? After Tristan Strong and his friends aid the Ridgefolk in defeated the Abiyoyo, he arrives and asks for the Story Box. When Tristan says they need it to save MidPass, he says the island is overrun by iron monsters and no one is left and continue to ask for the Story Box. Tristan does not believe him and goes to leave but High John goes over to him and causes Tristan to experience pain that causes him to pass out. And when he set his mind to it, he could work harder and faster than anybody else in the county. And seeing his good work, the master would calm down and let John live to see another day.Thandiwe | King Cotton | John Henry | Eddie Garvey | Maafa | Chestnutt | Nana Strong | Junior | Patty Roller | Granny Z
