His jealousy, his possessiveness, his yearning to be more than “just friends”… But Yamato is absolutely terrified of losing his best friend Kakeru if he ever admits the truth that he is and has been in love with him forever. I think a lot of folks who wring their hands about The State Of Pokémon™ would be better off just realizing that they outgrew Pokémon and stop making that GAME FREAK's fault.

It takes me back to my first love story that wasn’t understood at the time as this series so skillfully is. I wish I could read Japanese for the raw chapters, because I could only find up to chapter 5 of English translation. If you’re looking for a hot and steamy BL romance, this isn’t the title for you – but for a heartfelt and beautifully observed manga about ordinary young people finding their way in life (with some genuinely touching insights) this can’t be bettered at the moment (except, possibly, by the equally charming yet moving Skip and Loafer). Now that Netflix is showing “I Cannot Reach You,” I find it a tender portrayal of two young male Japanese students who are talented and passionate.

And Mika’s accomplished graphic style is really well suited to portraying the characters; I’ve mentioned before that some of Kakeru’s extreme reaction shots (and they are extreme!

While this doesn’t seem to bother Yamato, Kakeru wants more people to see just how great his friend is and tries to get him to put himself out there more, but things suddenly get awkward between these two friends when Kakeru asks Yamato if there’s anyone he likes and Yamato responds be saying: “Kakeru. Although hidden from Kakeru for years, when Yamato’s feelings overflow and he awkwardly hugs Kakeru in a jealous fit, will this be the catalyst they need to confess to each other? I also like that both characters are really quite normal and sensible when it comes to the situation. The unsubtle implication is that anyone not attending is going to be on a romantic date so it’s only those who don’t have significant others who’ll be going along.I Cannot Reach you does go over the line of consent in one scene but it is very light and treated as a bad thing. There have already been brief glimpses of their early schooldays together: we’ve seen Kakeru fiercely defend the quiet, reserved Yamato when insensitive classmates made unkind remarks about his absent father. Joking aside, this is a fairly conventional BL manga, but one that still managed to captivate and draw me in with its likeable main characters and romantic tension. Honestly, I am quite surprised this manga isn't as popular as it should be, and it's a shame, really, because if anything, it is up to par if not MUCH MORE than most.

EditSynopsis Childhood friends Kakeru Ashiya and Yamato Oohara seem like they would never get along with each other.

Sure, there are other stories happening during those times, or else it would be downright infuriating, but it can still feel like the story is dragging here and there. Kakeru isn’t sure if he understood his friend’s words correctly, but he can’t quite convince himself that he got it wrong, either . Frieren is still going strong continuing from last season, but The Dangers in My Heart is the one stealing the spotlight! Not a problem—unless you’re in love with your childhood best friend…How in the world can Kakeru make Yamato look at him when Yamato is completely out of his league?
