The Samsung QN94A is part of Samsung's latest flagship range. Samsung has really upped the ante for next-gen gaming, with eARC, ALLM, 120Hz, HGiG tone-mapping, VRR, and Motion Xcelerator Turbo Plus (a nifty bit of tech which prevents lingering residual image while you play at high speed). Replaced the TCL 6 Series/R555 2022 QLED with the TCL QM8/QM850G QLED as the 'Best TCL TV' and refreshed the text for accuracy and consistency. The TCL 5-Series S535 uses Roku TV, an egalitarian smart TV platform that has a fair and robust search feature and most of the major streaming apps. The TCL 5-Series (S535) is priced on the lower end of mid-range, but it certainly doesn’t look like it. With a minimal bezel and metallic frame, the 5-Series should look modern and sleek in any living room. Android also means built-in Chromecast and Google Assistant. TCL’s own menu is accessible via the grey styled buttons on the remote, but there isn’t as much scope for configuring settings as you’ll see on other brands. Features such as the T-Link (HDMI CEC) aren’t on by default, and others – such as Game and Sports modes – override picture settings on all the HDMI inputs. You lose access to other picture presets until they’re toggled off.

Similarly, upscaling isn’t wonderful, which isn’t surprising considering that the 5-Series uses TCL’s AIPQ processor that we largely found unsuccessful at upconversion on the TCL 6-Series. Making matters worse, its lower native refresh rate of 60Hz means motion processing isn’t nearly as good as the TCL 6-Series that’s just one step above it. The TCL Roku 55RP620K is a solid, affordable TV. The Roku OS is the highlight – the number of apps, the accessibility, the range of features; it’s an absolute bargain from that perspective.

Philips OLED807 Review: A smooth and decent upgrade

Panasonic’s mid-range TVs have always rated very highly among the experts, though as recently as last year they were missing key tech for up-to-the-minute gaming. The Panasonic JX940 is a literal game-changer though, thanks to what it calls “Game Mode Extreme”. This adds 4K at 120Hz, VRR, and two HDMI 2.1 ports. That all combines with ALLM and AMD FreeSync Premium for an all-round smooth, lifelike gaming experience. With DTS-HD on blu-ray discs and streaming platforms, movies have never sounded better! DTS Surround Sound is available on over 50,000 streaming titles worldwide.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X will output gameplay to a 4K TV, so you can see the full glory of 4K-optimised games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II or FIFA 23. You said you wanted an immersive gaming experience? You’ll get it with these perfect pairings.

TCL has launched 8K and Mini-LED TVs stateside, but its presence on this side of the pond has been a low key affair. There are signs this is changing with the introduction of more Android TVs, while its C71 and C81 QLED TVs provided some competition for Samsung at the cheaper end of the market. TCL 50C720K 50 Inch QLED 4K Ultra HD Smart TV offers and online promotions, straight from the current Costco leaflet Assembly is super simple and involves tightening two screws for each foot and inserting the power cable. Much like the Hisense Roku, you’ll reach the set-up screen within minutes of taking the TV out the box. There’s also wall-mounting support if that’s of interest, with the VESA wall-mount available separately. The slim-ish bezels are perfectly fine and in keeping with the fuss-free tone the TCL 55RP620K sets up. Interface Forget about missing all-important details when the on-screen action is hectic. Instead, TCL's proprietary MEMC (Motion Estimation/Motion Compensation) algorithm can take control, smoothing out movies and sports broadcasts. Blur and motion trails will be a thing of the past, as you enjoy crystal clear viewing experiences, every time. Dual-stand configuration makes it accessible for different areas, and its minimalist design and slim aesthetic are neat.

Most 4K TVs are also loaded with smart features, which are great for when you want to take a break from games, or for when your roommates want to get in some Netflix-and-chill time. Features include support and functionality for streaming media services, voice search, or mirroring content from your phone or tablet. What is 4K? This is the refresh rate — how many times the screen refreshes per minute. The higher the refresh rate the smoother the handling of motion and gameplay is. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X pumping out games at 120fps, you want a 4K TV that can handle that with 120Hz. Thankfully, most do. You’ll also find some TVs equipped with VRR. This means Variable Refresh Rate, which keeps pace with sudden changes in a game’s fps output to prevent stuttering within gameplay. What is the best gaming TV? AndroidTV's hands-free voice controls provide complete flexibility. Without leaving your chair, you can choose content, launch apps, turn on your set, switch inputs, search for movies, and much more. It's simple, user-friendly, and incredibly convenient. You can enable or disable voice control by switching on and off the dedicated button behind your TV. As of their 2021 lineup, TCL started to include extra gaming features like HDMI 2.1 bandwidth and VRR support on their higher-end models. Even their mid-range models now support 4k @ 144Hz gaming, which is great for gamers. We’ve been wondering whether TCL, like Hisense has done in recent years, could offer an affordable alternative to premium TVs. Having got our hands on the 55C715K QLED, we now have a firmer idea of whether this is the case. TCL 55C715K price and availability

Image-wise you’re in safe hands. The X90J supports Dolby Vision, but the real visual power is Sony’s Cognitive Processor XR — this analyses the images and figures out which areas to focus in on. It’s an intuitive tech that processes images like the human brain and eye. The result is better detail and depth, and more realistic nuances. What can you do about it? Well, we found some success by tweaking the settings (we set Action Smoothing to High and LED Motion Clarity to On) but we still found motion artifacting in fast-paced camera pans. It’s just something you’ll have to live with. Given how similar the TCL Roku has been to the Hisense Roku, you might expect picture quality to be along the same lines. It is in some ways, but in others it’s clear TCL and Hisense have taken differing approaches.

The Google TVs have a medium-sized remote, which isn't bad since it's very comfortable and responsive. The TCL branding is impressively minimal, and the remotes are identical across TCL's 2023 range. The next generation is here. By which we mean next-gen consoles: the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. They're pretty much standard for serious gamers going forward. Which means it's time to also upgrade to a 4K TV. Why miss out on the stunning detail and fast response gameplay that 4K TVs offer? Replaced the TCL 6 Series/R646 2021 QLED with the TCL 6 Series/R655 2022 QLED, and the TCL 5 Series/S546 2021 QLED with the TCL 5 Series/S555 2022 QLED.TCL TVs use a mix of Roku OS and Google TV, so the app store and channel lineup vary depending on which model you get. Roku-powered TVs give you access to the Roku Channel Store, offering a good selection of streaming channels. TCL's 2023models use Google TV 11, and theinterface is clean and pretty simple to navigate. It's divided into multiple rows, and each row presents content from different apps. These rows can be customized to your liking, as you can choose which apps are disabled and where. However, because there are so many rows, it can feel overwhelming, and it may take some time to fully navigate the interface if you're not used to it. TCL TVs aren't as polished as other brands, as there are often issues with upscaling and local dimming. They also tend to have a wide variety of quirks to contend with. Whites are crisply and purely defined, and with 4K SDR content – such as Netflix’s Sense8 – concerns about how punchy and vibrant the TV can be dissipate. Turn to a stream of The Crown on Netflix in Dolby Vision HDR, though, and those issues rear their head again. Complexions of the royal family take on a pallid tone, with the image less expressive. Screen uniformity isn’t the strongest either, with clouding in the corners of Bad Times at the El Royale (4K HDR10+) via a 4K Blu-ray player. It’s less of a problem during the day, but becomes fairly evident when light levels in a room start to drop. Viewing angles are better than most at this price – although, inevitably, colours lose their punchiness and brightness the wider you are.
