Up until the early 20th century bright blue was the colour of young girls (think Alice in Wonderland), and this dress certainly has a more innocent look than Carlotta’s military decorated red dress.

Don't miss Ali Ewoldt's spectacular Christine Daae in 'The Phantom of the Opera' at Broadway's Majestic Theatre. It's not that a costume needs to be grand to be beautiful, but opulence helps with immersion when the majority of the costumes are themselves costumes for the fictitious operas within the musical.

I also love it when my wonderful leading man, James Barbour, helps me out by carrying my train up the stairs to my dressing room after the show. It has a fairly fitted bodice and a trained skirt, and elbow long sleeves with engageants (lace hanging down from the elbows). This costume was inspired by portrait titled "Empress Elisabeth of Austria in Courtly Gala Dress with Diamond Stars (1865)" by artist Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873).

This is a hard one, as the costumes are just so different and perform different functions for the mediums. The bodice is decorated with hundreds of beads in curved and pointed shapes echoing that of the tabs. which is why the costume doesn't fit the theme: it was something they had backstage and just threw on Christine. I never got "star princess" from the stage Masquerade outfit, but got "flower" immediately from the movie. As you may know, Ewoldt made history as the first Asian-American actress to star as fierce, young opera diva Christine Daae in the long-running Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.Again the red, green and gold shades are kept, and again the design shows how Victorians would envision a historical style rather than showing actual historical style. It mimics the late 17th century/ early 18th century Mantua, especially in the waterfall backdrapes and the engageant sleeves. She is naturally a dirty blonde though so we knew we would have to dye her hair once it was closer to Halloween. Her costume is a hybrid of a Robe de Cour (stiff and grand court dress) and a Robe a la Francaise (softer dress, still used by the nobility and still very posh, but differently constructed).
