It is based on a true story and is about a man who could had have stopped the second world war from happening. That's not to say it's all doom and gloom as there is plenty of humour and the overall quality of the writing is something very special and very rare. When their house, and all those on their street, are destroyed, ten-year-old Barney and his mother must gather what few possessions they have left and travel by train to an aunt’s house. I'd caught part of a piece on TV (the One Show) with Michael Morpurgo who was talking about his inspiration for writing this book and I was intrigued; I thought to myself "I'll have to get that book". I decided I had to do something and told them the kind of story I used to tell my kids – it was like a soap opera, and they focused on it.

This book is amazing I give it five stars and recommend this book to people who love reading about the past!
